Eric Gales’ Electrifying Performance Leaves Indianapolis Spellbound
Date: June 9, 2023
Last month, the music scene in Indianapolis reached new heights as renowned guitarist Eric Gales took the stage at the Old National Centre in Indianapolis. From the very first note, it was clear that the audience was in for an extraordinary night of blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll.
Gales’ performance was nothing short of breathtaking. With his upside-down Magneto Sonnet RawDawg guitar in hand, he effortlessly weaved together a tapestry of soulful melodies, blistering riffs, and jaw-dropping solos. Each note seemed to further the telling of a story, captivating everyone in attendance. The energy emanating from Gales and his band was infectious, spreading like wildfire throughout the venue.
One of the standout moments of the night came during an extended guitar solo that left jaws dropped and eyes widened in awe. Gales’ fingers moved across the fretboard with such speed and precision that it seemed almost unreal. The combination of technical mastery and raw emotion was a true testament to his artistry.
What made the concert even more remarkable was Gales’ ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. Between songs, he shared stories and anecdotes, inviting everyone into his world. He even brought out the newest member of the Gales family, his dog Crown, who seems to love being on stage during the show! The crowd responded with thunderous applause, making the atmosphere feel like an intimate gathering of friends rather than a typical concert.
A very serious, thought-provoking segment of the show came during Eric’s performance of his song “Too Close to the Fire.” This song examines racism in America, with Gales’ lyrics asking, “Would you be friends with me? Would you be scared of me, if you saw me on the street?”
For me, this song inspires deep self-reflection. If this man wasn’t standing on the stage, one of the best guitarists alive, how would I react to him? Would I move to the other side of the road if I saw him walking toward me at night? Or would I walk up and shake his hand and have a conversation? This song is a reminder that we all need to look deep within and treat each other with great care. We must try to recognize and work past our own unconscious biases.
The band, featuring Eric’s wife LaDonna Gales behind one the drum kits, was a powerhouse in their own right, providing a solid foundation for his virtuosity. Currently there are two kits onstage for an Eric Gales show, and Nick Hayes is in complete command of the other one. Bassist Orlando Thompson was locked in solidly, driving the music forward with unwavering intensity. To round things out, the work on the keyboards was spot-on all night long. Chemistry between the musicians was palpable, showcasing a strong bond that radiated from the stage.
Everyone loves Jimi Hendrix…
Another fantastic part of this evening was when the band went into a rendition of Hendrix’ Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). It seems we have been extremely lucky to witness several artists’ renditions of this tune, and Eric’s was truly one of the best of them.
As the night drew to a close, it was clear that Indianapolis had witnessed something truly special. Was Eric Gales’ performance was a tour de force of talent, passion, and pure musical magic. The crowd left the venue with their spirits lifted, still buzzing with the energy that had filled the air throughout the evening.
If you ever have the chance to see Eric Gales live in concert, do not hesitate. His music transcends genres, touching the very core of your being. Saw him at the Pori Jazz festival in Pori, Finland on July 13 this year. What a show! He really took the stage by storm and had the huge audience wrapped around his pinkie even before he had played the first note. And yes, I can certainly concur with all of the above on all counts. The opening vamp already had everybody’s hair stand on end but to me the most touching moment was the intensity with which he sang and played Too Close to the Fire. I love covering blues songs that speak to me on a personal level but this one I just could not possibly cover. Can’t think of anyone who could. Pure emotion. Being a festival, the concert lasted only a good 60 minutes, which of course was far too short but Eric was so taken by the atmosphere and the reception that chances are we’ll be treated to a full-fledged concert of his in the not so distant future in Finland. Fingers crossed.
