A Time-Traveling Journey through Chicago Blues
The Cash Box Kings’ latest album, “Oscar’s Motel,” is a delightful throwback to the golden days of Chicago Blues. With excellent lyrics and vocals, catchy guitar licks that speak volumes without the need for an abundance of notes, a great feel from the rythym section, and soulful harmonica throughout, this album is a testament to the enduring allure of this classic genre.
Track-by-Track Impressions:
1. Oscar’s Motel: The opening track, the album’s namesake, sets the tone with its bluesy charm. The guitar work is immediately captivating, harkening back to Chicago’s blues heritage. Fans of Muddy Waters will feel right at home listening to this track, where the ladies are invited to come stay after they get rid of their man.
2. Down On The South Side: Perhaps my personal favorite on this release, this track takes us on a journey to the heart of the South Side, a place steeped in blues history. The band’s authenticity shines through, making it feel like a genuine blues pilgrimage. You can really picture all of the characters described in the lyrics as they all experience a night out on the South Side of Chicago, and imagine what it would have been like to be there. I am reminded of the great Fenton Robinson as I sit and listen to this one.
3. Please Have Mercy: The harmonica takes center stage here, adding a layer of emotion to the already soulful lyrics. It’s a track that tugs at the heartstrings and keeps you hooked.
4. I Can’t Stand You: The Cash Box Kings demonstrate their mastery of the blues and sense of humor with a song featuring a fighting couple working out their problems on record. Lots of fun.
5. Hot Little Mess: This track brings a lively and infectious energy, with a catchy melody that lingers in your mind. Reminiscent of 50’s rock and R&B, it’s a testament to the band’s ability to blend musical history with a contemporary edge.
6. Nobody Called It The Blues: An emotional song about the horrors of slavery in America and the atrocious acts committed on human beings during that time – the only minor solace being that these hardships birthed the Blues music that carried so many people through, and so many people came to love.
7. Pontiac Blues: Just an upbeat, fun song about how much a woman loves her man’s Pontiac.
8. Trying So Hard: The 5-minute runtime allows the band to fully explore their musical prowess. It’s a journey through blues evolution with captivating harmonica, piano, and powerful vocals. A guy is doing everything he can for his significant other, only to have her treat him terribly and tell people she is leaving him.
9. She Dropped The Axe On Me: A track with a great swinging feel, musical prowess, and lyrics that showcase the band’s songwriting skills. Again, fans of Muddy Waters will find themselves loving this one for sure. A song with a great harmonica solo, and a story of a man who should have run away much much sooner.
10. I Want What Chaz Has: Chaz has all the girls and a really nice car. No explanation is necessary.
11. Ride Santa Ride: A lively and fun closing track that leaves a smile on your face, concluding the album on a high note. Oscar gives Santa a lift in his Caddy and they deliver all the presents on Christmas Eve. So not only is Oscar busy putting out great music, he is out there saving Christmas. You’re welcome.
